Despite what we may think, you and I are merely stewards of our bodies. The better we look after them, the longer we get to keep them. Beyond simply prolonging our lives, there are many differing views on why we should maintain our physical health and well-being, ranging from something as simple (and some might say shallow) as achieving that six-pack for your Instagram influencer shot, to the most noble reason of all—giving of yourself for the benefit of others—to serve.
Whether it be material goods, money, or simply physical assistance, the spotlight often shines on those who give when they have little to give (think Mother Teresa or Mahatma Gandhi). But the reality is, such people are exceptions. Their deeds are newsworthy because they are outliers. If we relied only on these 'one in a generation' saints, the world would have been doomed ages ago. Instead, it’s been up to us ‘ordinary’ types to make the world a better place—people who are not only willing but who have built their lives to the point where they are also able. This principle holds true in all key areas of life—spiritual, intellectual, social, financial, and, in the context of this blog, physical health.
One of the most well-known Bible verses (stay with me now) reads, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." According to this teaching, it stands to reason that if you don’t love yourself - meaning you don’t take care of yourself - your capacity to love others will be limited. That’s a solid ‘why’ for looking after yourself first. I would even go so far as to say that if you have loved ones relying on you, taking care of yourself is an obligation. All of the key aspects of our lives are interconnected, and by improving your physical health, you’ll increase your impact on others - not just physically, but in all areas of life.
As is often said, the best time to start was yesterday, the second best time is now, and time truly waits for no one. The world, more than ever, needs you at your best. So, do those around you a favour. In the truest sense of the phrase, take care!
