Once a Millionaire...Sort of

Back in the early nineties, I spent time as a volunteer missionary in Indonesia. My self-funded monthly living allowance of AUD $650, carefully budgeted to cover food, transport, and basic needs.

When I first exchanged it into Indonesian rupiah, I received over a million IDR. At the time, the exchange rate was roughly 1 AUD to 1,580 IDR.

It was a surreal moment, watching a modest sum of Aussie currency transform into a thick wad of rupiah. Technically, I was a millionaire.

And it got me thinking.

Just as 1 Australian dollar is worth many rupiah, what if we viewed our time the same way - as a precious currency?

The activities we spend our time on - our families, our health, our passions, our digital distractions - don’t all carry equal value. But unlike money, we get to decide what our exchange rate in time is.

So what’s your current exchange rate? How much time are you spending on exercise or movement, before you earn time for entertainment? How about quality time spent with someone you love, before you go and watch your favourite Netflix series.

No matter what we say our values are (you can say it as much as you like), what we actually spend our time on will always reveal the truth.

You’ll often hear us say that today is the second-best time to start. The best was yesterday.

So today, take a moment to check your internal exchange rates. You might be surprised at the trade-offs you're making - and the small shifts that could lead to big returns.
