Time for something different

I usually run the same route every day. The familiarity and the known expectations of the run make it easier to get out the door. I know where I am going, I know where a paver sticks out, and I know when a dog will stick its head through the fence as I shuffle past and bark at me. I have run this loop so many times that my running app Strava has labelled me the local legend for that particular route.

The other day, for no particular reason, I decided to take a different route. The hill was steeper and there were fewer paved paths, but I found myself discovering mansions and lovely parts of the neighbourhood that I would not have known about if I had stayed on the beaten path.

Doing something different brings discovery. You learn more about yourself, and you see more of what is around you. A small change in direction can open up new sights, new ideas, and a fresh sense of momentum.
